The Portuguese way traditionally leaves from the city of Vigo and traverses the northern most part of Portugal before entering Spain and continuing on to Santiago de Compostela. As Catholic influence in Portugal grew and the Muslim rulers were replaced by the Reconquista many Portugese wanted to visit the Cathedral of St. James in Santiago. Thus this very direct route north from Portugal into Spain was created.
